On Monday June 25th, a special hearing took place in the European Parliement. ALDE (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe) and Femmes for Freedom organised a hearing to raise awareness to marital captivity and discuss potential solutions. This was a milestone in the fight against marital captivity, as the EU speaks on behalf of 28 Member States.
In three panels, several speakers from political, academic and civil society circles discussed the issue. Assita Kanko, Anita Nanhoe, Pooyan Tamimi Arab, Ruth-Halperin-Kaddari, Frans van der Velden, Leontine Bijleveld, Mahmoud Jaraba and other spoke in Parliament.
Besides ALDE, Hilde Vautmans, Marietje Schaake and Sophie 't Veld took the floor. Moreover, Charlie Goerens, rapporteur Early and Forced Marriages on behalf of ALDE, spoke on his findings in the recently published report. You can find the report of this hearing here. Based on the hearing, several recommendations were developed by ALDE and Femmes for Freedom. Femmes for Freedom is grateful to ALDE and appreciates their efforts to take action against martial captivity.
